Who: Garance Doré is a French fashion illustrator and blogger. Timothy Sullivan translates her posts from French to English. The site design is by Colorz.
What: Doré illustrates, photographs and writes about street fashion, her personal fashion moments and life in general.
When: The blog is updated nearly every day, or even more often.
Where: Doré is based in Paris, but also blogs from New York and other fashion capitals. Her blog is located at www.garancedore.fr/en/
How: The blog uses WordPress as a content management system. Doré photographs friends and people in the street who have a style she finds interesting. She illustrates posts that relate to her personal life and fashion experiences. My guess is she does a light pencil sketch to fasten down the main points of the drawing, then works up the lines with an Indian ink pen, similar to a Pitt or an Omicron. Once the drawing is scanned into the computer, blocks of color are added with Photoshop’s bucket tool. Occasionally, color is added with marker or wash before scanning. Would love to hear if I’m right!
Why: Garance Doré writes with a refreshing and personal voice. The tone to her blog is personal and confidential without being confessional, girlish without being cloying. Tim Sullivan does an excellent job of reflecting her personality in his translations–recently she wrote her own English texts while he was away, and there was no difference in the mood and feel of the posts. Her illustrations have a vintage feel to them, just wish she would post more of them!
